An agreement regarding collaborative research project between the following institutions have been finalized this year:
1. Department of Geology University of Balochistan, Quetta.
2. National Centre of excellence in Geology, university of Peshawar.
3. University of Colorado, Boulder, USA.
4. University of Montana USA.
Under this project, the experts from USA will provide the technical assistance in terms of training and interpretation of the results. NCEG Peshawar will provide training and data processing facilities while the Department of Geology UOB will conduct the necessary field measurements.
Two instruments (GPS) have been donated to the Department for a period of one year. One of the instruments is installed in the Museum of Geology, with an antenna on the roof. The second instrument will be used in the field.
The measurements from these instruments enable (1) estimate of crustal velocities (2) Slip rates of the Active Faults.
These data will yield estimates of strain accumulation in this part of Pakistan indicating qualitative estimates of future earthquake hazards.
