Department Of Library and Information Science
Introduction
Libraries have all along played a pivotal role in society in terms of providing effective means of intellectual awakening in all the walks of life. The last decades have been characterized by a variety of professional careers both in libraries and the information centers. Therefore, the need for library education was long being felt in this province in early 70's but opportunity to receiving library education was not available since 1980 in the province. The libraries in Balochistan were being managed mostly with untrained librarians except the very few. With the passage of time, the crying need for trained library professionals in the province was felt earnestly. Consequently, Department of Library Science (now Library and Information Science) was established in 1981 with the commencement of classes of Diploma in Library Science (DLS). Master of Library Science (MLS) program was started in 1984. M. Phil and Ph.D. Programs will be started in future soon after the completion of Ph.D. studies of the faculty. The departments has started the two years program of master of library and information science (MLIS) from the academic session-2006 and adopted the new curriculum designed by Higher Education Commission. (curriculum is available on HEC website).
Educational Goal:To provide library education and promote facilities for advance study and research in the field of library and information science.
