Seismology and Geophysical Studies

The Department of Seismology and Geophysical Studies (Geophysics) is established in 2016, inaugurated by federal Minister Mr. Ahsan Iqbal. Higher Education Commission established separate building block in University of Balochistan for department of Seismology and Geophysical Studies. Geophysics is an emerging and exploration Science. The Department has great importance because it is established in Balochistan Province where zones of high Seismicity (Earthquake Hazardous Zone), High Potential zones (Oil and Gas Reserves), Ground water retardation zones and Economic mineral reserves exists.
Geophysics is an exploration science, each branch of Geophysics plays significance role in our daily life, in the country economy and ecosystem of the earth. Geophysics has Eight major exploration branches i.e. Seismology (Study of Earthquake), Seismic Exploration Technique (Used for Oil and Gas Exploration), Electrical Resistivity Exploration Technique (Used for Ground Water Exploration) And for Mineral exploration purposes Gravity, Magnetic, Spontaneous Potential, Induced Potential and Radiometric Exploration Techniques are used.
The department of Seismology and Geophysical Studies is offering BS-4 Year program in Geophysics. Seismology and Geophysical studies Department has a well-established computer lab, a Departmental Library with advance study books and a Geophysical Lab with new and latest Geophysical surveys instruments. The Department has close coordination with Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Companies (Balochistan Energy Company Limited (BECL), Oil and Gas Development Company limited (OGDCL) and Pakistan petroleum limited (PPL)), Water Exploration Companies, Mineral Exploration Companies (Balochistan Mineral Exploration Company) and Hydrocarbon Development Institute of Pakistan (HDDIP). Internship opportunities are provided to students after sixth semester in different energy and power sectors.
